Marten Rijckaert (1587-1631) was a Flemish landscape painter born in Antwerp into a family of artists. Despite losing his left arm in his youth, he became a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1611 and produced many works rich in detail and atmosphere. His imaginary landscapes, often influenced by Italianate art, present a subtle combination of natural and architectural elements, reflecting a poetic vision of the countryside.
His portrait, painted by Anthony van Dyck, is kept at the Prado Museum in Madrid. This work highlights Rijckaert's dignity and resilience, while capturing his singular appearance and introspective calm.
