DESCRIPTION +

An impressive pair of architectural pilasters in white Carrara marble, carved in low relief with a rich decorative scheme inspired by the Italian Renaissance. The composition, organised along a strictly symmetrical axis, displays an ornamental repertoire of great finesse, combining acanthus scrolls, grotesques, foliage masks, garlands of fruit, abundant baskets, antique urns and knotted ribbons.

The decoration evokes the grand ornamental friezes of the late 17th century and, more specifically, the style developed by Jean Bérain, in which decorative fantasy, classical balance and references to Antiquity are elegantly intertwined. The richness of the relief is tempered by the architectural rigour of the whole, creating an effect of remarkable distinction.

The quality of the sculpture, characterised by the precision of the chiselling and the subtlety of the modelling, highlights the luminous whiteness of the Carrara marble. With their monumental proportions and decorative refinement, these pilasters stand as a remarkable testament to the Neoclassical taste for Renaissance ornamentation, as reinterpreted in Italy at the turn of the 19th century.
