Adriaen Van der Kabel:
Trained in The Hague between 1645 and 1648 in Jan van Goyen's studio, Adriaen van der Kabel began his career in the tradition of Dutch landscape painting. His earliest known works, dating from around 1648, reveal the influence of his master as well as that of Jacob van Ruisdael and Aelbert Cuyp: vast silvery skies, damp light and villages bathed in a subtly nuanced atmosphere.
From the mid-1650s onwards, his interest turned to southern landscapes. A Southern Harbour View dated 1656 already heralds the decisive evolution of his style towards brighter, more architectural Mediterranean compositions.
