Bottle Cooler in mahogany
Joseph Gengenbach Canabas
18th century
Mahogany and silvered brass
76,5 x 56,5 x 51cm
A curved-shaped cooler, in mahogany veneer, by Joseph Gengenbach Canabas.
It opens via a drawer set into the side panel, with a gilded bronze ring pull, and features a bowl-shaped top into which are set two silver-plated bottle holders and two long oval storage compartments.
It is supported by four flared, arched and moulded legs, joined together by two concave cross-braces. The legs terminate in gilded bronze-set feet resting on castors.
A transitional-period piece by Canabas, bearing a faint mark and the initials ‘JME’
This model is typical of that of CANABAS (1715–1717), who was awarded his master’s certificate in 1766. Its lines are clean yet finely crafted; the mahogany is a beautiful red; the legs are splayed, typical of Canabas; and the back is very curvaceous.
A similar model can be found in the highly regarded
*18th-Century French Furniture* by Pierre Kjellberg, p. 164, with the difference being a white marble top and a single shelf between the legs.
