88 x 144 x 67 cm (34 ⁵/₈ x 56 ³/₄ x 26 ³/₈ inches)
violet wood bronze
Early 18th century
A violetwood chest of drawers with a crossbow-shaped front and sides featuring very pronounced curves, adorned with beautiful marquetry of interlaced scrollwork within banded borders.
The front features three drawers arranged in two rows, with six gilded bronze lock plates (one of which is decorative) adorned with fantastical animal heads, seashells, and acanthus leaves.
Four attractive, drooping gilded bronze handles stand out for their finely chiseled, dynamic rosette designs.
The gilded bronze trim is also striking on the apron, which features openwork decoration of shells, foliage, and scrolls; on the lower panels, which are adorned with a “reine” curl motif in a medallion surrounded by acanthus leaves and shells, tapering down to a narrow strip that extends to the feet, which are wrapped in shells and acanthus leaves.
Curved on all sides, it supports a top made of royal red marble.
A piece from the early Louis XV period attributed to Jacques Philippe CAREL.
