A large pair of Louis XVI-style three-light candelabra
41.5 x 31 x 17 cm (16 ³/₈ x 12 ¹/₄ x 6 ³/₄ inches)
gilt bronze
18th century
With a base in the typical Louis XVI style, it is distinguished by its upper section, which is divided into two light arms supporting three candle holders.
The two opposing conical candle holders are very finely beaded and chiselled with geometric motifs.
They are surmounted and supported by candlesticks, themselves chased with geometric friezes or stylised foliage.
These join the central candlestick via a sweeping arm encircled by a band featuring stylised foliage, finished with a floral rosette and connected to the central shaft by a similar rosette.
The central binet, which towers above the other two and features identical chiselled motifs, has a vase-like shape that does not require a bobèche.
Its base is decorated with a stylised foliage motif, whilst the neck features a beaded pattern and is chiselled with delicate leaves. It continues vertically the elegance of the circular shoulder, shaped like an ancient vase with a foliage motif resting on a capital with heart-shaped mouldings, and the conical shaft with a beaded ear motif in the fluting, encircled by a beautiful beaded garland alternating with medallions.
The knot features a coiled garland motif and leads to a concave platform with a stylised foliage motif, followed by tiered bases, culminating in a wide circular plinth.
The distinctive feature of this large pair of candelabra lies in their design as two separate parts, which may be detachable at the neck, thus allowing them to be converted from a single-candle holder to a three-light candelabra.
